On the East Side in 1926, life happened on the sidewalk.
Tony Sarg filled a page with the people you'd find there: a peddler holding up a chicken like it's the deal of the century, a boy scratching his head next to a basket of fruit, a girl working on an ice cream cone, a neighbor on a wooden crate with her arms crossed, a man napping on a box in the middle of it all, and one small dog.
A whole neighborhood, one person at a time.
Pairs well with its companion print, West Side Characters.
About this print
Reproduced from Tony Sarg's Up & Down New York (1926), a book of 24 color illustrations of the city. Sarg is best known as the father of modern American puppetry, and a year after this book came out, he designed the first giant balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
I scanned every plate from a facsimile of the book at high resolution and spent months cleaning them up, removing dust, scratches, and printing dots and correcting the color.
Printed to order on archival matte paper. This is a new print, not an original plate. Frame not included.
