This place doesn't exist anymore.
Washington Market fed lower Manhattan for over a century — crates of produce stacked to the ceiling, barrels in the aisles, porters hauling boxes through a crowd that never thinned. Tony Sarg drew it in 1927, when it was still the busiest food market in the city.
Look at how much is happening. Someone haggling over a crate. A dog working the floor for scraps. A man carrying more than he should. Sarg fills every inch of the frame, the way the market itself was filled.
The buildings are gone now. The drawing is what's left.
About this print
Reproduced from Tony Sarg's New York (1927), a portfolio of 23 color plates capturing the city at the height of the Jazz Age. Sarg is best known today as the father of modern puppetry and the creator of the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.
I found a copy of the original book and spent several months scanning and restoring every plate at high resolution, keeping the warmth and linework of the 1927 lithographs intact.
Printed on archival matte paper. This is a new print, not an original plate.
