A street with no straight lines.
Tony Sarg drew Chinatown in 1927, looking down on a block where every surface is doing something — signs stacked above signs, awnings over storefronts, goods spilling toward the curb, and a street so narrow the buildings seem to lean into it.
Sarg's overhead view is the whole trick. You get the architecture and the commerce and the traffic all at once, the way you'd actually experience the block if you could hover forty feet above it.
About this print
Reproduced from Tony Sarg's New York (1927), a portfolio of 23 color plates capturing the city at the height of the Jazz Age. Sarg is best known today as the father of modern puppetry and the creator of the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.
I found a copy of the original book and spent several months scanning and restoring every plate at high resolution, keeping the warmth and linework of the 1927 lithographs intact.
Printed on archival matte paper. This is a new print, not an original plate.
