Everyone in the room is looking up.
Tony Sarg drew the American Museum of Natural History in 1927, at the height of the city's dinosaur fever, and he drew it the way a child experiences it: enormous bones overhead, a crowd of small figures below, and about forty separate things happening at once. A guard who has seen it all. A kid who has escaped his mother. Someone taking notes.
The longer you look, the more you find. That's the whole pleasure of a Sarg.
About this print
Reproduced from Tony Sarg's New York (1927), a portfolio of 23 color plates capturing the city at the height of the Jazz Age. Sarg is best known today as the father of modern puppetry and the creator of the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.
I found a copy of the original book and spent several months scanning and restoring every plate at high resolution, keeping the warmth and linework of the 1927 lithographs intact.
Printed on archival matte paper. This is a new print, not an original plate.
