This is the New York Stock Exchange trading floor in 1927, drawn by Tony Sarg at the peak of the Roaring Twenties. The Dow is climbing. The brokers are running. Paper slips are everywhere. Nobody in this room knows what's coming in October 1929.
Sarg captures open outcry trading at its most chaotic: brokers swarming the circular posts, arms raised, shouting orders into the noise. The floor is already buried in paper. The visitor gallery watches from the right, safely removed from the scramble below. Every figure is in motion.
This is Wall Street before computers, before electronic trading, before the world changed.
About this print
Reproduced from Tony Sarg's New York (1927), a portfolio of 23 color plates capturing the city at the height of the Jazz Age. Sarg is best known today as the father of modern puppetry and the creator of the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons.
I found a copy of the original book and spent several months scanning and restoring every plate at high resolution, keeping the warmth and linework of the 1927 lithographs intact.
Printed on archival matte paper. This is a new print, not an original plate.
